If nobody winces once in a while, you’re not leading

A lot of people want leadership to feel nice. They feel they've earned the pip on their collar. They want it to be supportive, very human, calm more often than not, warm and lovely.

Fine.

But if it feels lovely all the time, chances are someone is ducking the real bit.

Because proper leadership creates the odd wince.

Not because you are rude. Not because you enjoy making people squirm. But because truth, standards and clarity have a nasty habit of colliding with people’s preferences. That is the job.

Too many leaders mistake a smooth room for a healthy culture - it isn’t.

Sometimes a smooth room is just a room full of people politely stepping around the one thing that most needs saying.

The best teams I’ve seen were never built on endless comfort. They were built on clean truth, early enough to matter.

A standard restated. A line drawn. A bit of drift named before it got promoted into personality.

That creates the odd wince, and I've seen this in their eyes - it's sickening, but real.

Good.

A wince is often just reality landing.

And reality, handled properly, is a far better leadership tool than all the reassurance in the world.
