← All thinking

Leadership does not get easier. You just get less easily fooled.

People love the idea that experience makes leadership easier - it doesn’t. It just helps you spot the real problem faster.

And one of the biggest, most persistent problems is this: the gap between what you think you’ve made crystal clear and what your team actually heard.

That gap is where all sorts of nonsense breeds.

You think the message was obvious. It was obvious… to you. Meanwhile everyone else is filling in the gaps with guesswork, good intentions and the occasional wildly wrong interpretation.

That’s not because teams are daft. It’s because leaders are often moving too fast and assuming clarity has happened just because words came out of their mouth.

It hasn’t.

Teams do not follow job titles, mission statements or whatever slogan has just been painted on the wall.

They follow clarity, behaviour and consistency. Simple and easily repeatable.

Every time I slowed down enough to explain the why properly, things shifted. Not with some grand corporate fanfare. Just cleanly, the culture steadied and performance lifted. People stopped second-guessing where they stood.

That’s why I’ve never bought the line that leadership is lonely because of pressure.

Pressure is part of it. The real loneliness is misalignment.

When people are not with you, you feel it in your bones. When they are, everything breathes again.
